Digital portfolios are a way for you to showcase your academic achievements, skills, and experiences to potential employers or graduate programs.  

As a student in the Department of Communication, you can develop your own professional digital portfolio by enrolling in COMM 4979: Digital Portfolio. This course is designed for students from diverse academic backgrounds and helps build essential career-readiness skills. The course also fulfills the immersion course requirement for the Communication major. 

Building Your Digital Portfolio

Digital portfolios can help you to build a compelling professional narrative and stand out in a competitive job market. No matter your area of specialty, a well-designed portfolio can help you highlight what you’ve learned at UConn and stand out in a competitive job market.  

While you are welcome to create one on your own, COMM 4979: Digital Portfolio provides the guidance, structure, and tools to help you craft a polished and professional portfolio. This immersion course is open to all communication majors, regardless of media production experience.

To enroll, you must complete the COMM 4982 Enrollment Request Form. The course supervisor will review your enrollment request. Priority is given to students entering their final semester.  

Once approved, you will receive an email with a permission number and instructions on how to enroll.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. COMM 4979 is open to students from all academic backgrounds, regardless of their experience with digital media production. 

While some students may have prior experience, the course is designed for all skill levels, including those new to digital portfolios. It covers both the technical aspects of portfolio creation and the conceptual and strategic elements of personal branding and professional presentation.  

This course is graded S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.) All students must submit their final portfolio. Depending on the number of credit hours you are enrolled in, the amount of 
total points to earn an S grade will differ: 

  • 3 Credit Hours 14 Points for S grade. 
  • 2 Credit Hours 11 Points for S grade. 
  • 1 Credit Hour 8 Points for S grade. 

NOTE: All students must submit a final portfolio for an “S” grade regardless of the current point total. Failure to submit a portfolio equals an automatic “U” grade. 

No. While the course does not have in-person meetings, it offers flexibility through arrangements with the instructor. Students can schedule meetings during regular office hours or at mutually agreed-upon times. 

The absence of in-person meetings does not reduce the quality of instruction or support. Instead, it creates a flexible learning environment that accommodates diverse schedules and preferences. By allowing one-on-one engagement with the instructor, COMM 4979 provides personalized guidance tailored to individual needs and goals. 

This approach encourages effective communication and collaboration, fostering a supportive learning community. It also reflects the evolving nature of education, using technology to facilitate meaningful interactions and enhance learning outcomes. 

Currently, COMM 4979 has limited seat availability due to high demand, with priority given to senior-standing majors during the fall and spring semesters. However, to accommodate other interested students, the course is also offered during the summer term, provided they meet the prerequisites.  

For fall and spring enrollment, senior standing is required due to limited seats. This ensures that graduating seniors receive priority, aligning with their transition into the professional world. Winter graduation candidates receive priority for the fall semester, while spring or summer graduation candidates receive priority for the spring semester. All students wishing to enroll during the regular semester must submit a request. 

Alternatively, during the summer term, students with junior standing or higher may enroll in COMM 4979, provided they meet the prerequisites. These include at least 12 credits in 2000-level or above COMM courses, ensuring accessibility while maintaining academic standards.
