New COMM Undergrad Curriculum FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will my requirements change?

No.  All current students are “grandfathered” so that they are only required to meet the Major requirement during the catalog year in which they became a CLAS student. For example, if you were a first-year COMM Major student in 2018-19, you would be responsible for meeting the Gen Ed and Major requirements that were in effect during the 2018-19 catalog year. You can find your Catalog Year listed in the top section of your Academic Requirements Report, which students may generate through Student Admin. The new course requirements will only go into place for students who are beginning in the Fall of 2021.

Will course numbers/titles change?

Yes, part of this redesign is that many of our course numbers and some titles will change. Degree Audit is working with us on editing language on your advisement reports, which will show both the old new numbers. This should provide some additional help. We are also including a table (below) that shows you what the old course numbers are names are and what the new numbers (and titles if there was a change) are.

Will the course numbers or titles change on my transcript?

No, any course that was taken under the old numbering system will remain that way. Any courses taken going forward will be under the new number system, but you will see them fill in the appropriate areas on your report.

What if I accidentally re-enroll in a course I have taken?

The good news is that when students re-enroll in a course, Student Admin will let them know once enrollment is successful; however, students must carefully check the “message” section on the course enrollment confirmation page, when the enrollment success message appears.

The message students will receive (see below for screen capture):

“You have already taken this class. When graded this course subject to repeat rules. Verify that the course will apply toward your course of study.”

Will I be able to repeat a course if the number has changed?

Yes, you will be able to repeat a course for a higher grade, but the new course number will be used on your report.

What about pre-requisites?

One of the benefits you will see is that pre-requisites have been simplified and streamlined. While you will remain grandfathered into your old catalog year, you will still get to use the new pre-requisite requirements which should help make access to many courses easier.

What about specific required courses for the major?

Courses like COMM 1000 and COMM 1100 remain unchanged. Students who have not yet taken COMM 1300 will now take COMM 2600, instead.

All courses designated as W courses will continue to meet the W requirement for the Major and for the CLAS General Education requirement.

Below is a table with the CORE courses, with their former and new course numbers and new names (where applicable):

OLD

3100 Persuasion 2500 Persuasion
3200 Interpersonal Communication 2200 Interpersonal Communication
3300 Effects of Mass Media 2300 Effects of Mass Media

What about “applied” courses?

Rules pertaining to the restriction on applied courses remain in effect for all students who have already become a CLAS student.  These courses are now numbered and title differently, but students may still count only two applied courses (6 credits) towards their 2000+ level requirement of 24 credits of 2000+ level coursework. If students choose to complete MORE than the minimum number of COMM courses, then students may certainly take more than two!

Here are the new numbers/titles for the Applied courses: (remember that EVERY course is Theory except the courses listed here)
